Asset Group Serial Numbers

Asset Groups are created by default with a serial gereration of Predefined, and all user guides etc give descriptions of using this method.  However our implementation has Asset Groups serial generation set to At Receipt.  This decision was made by a consultant with only Supply Chain experience.  What is the impact of this config in EAM and Inventory, as opposed to using the more generally used Predefined method?
