Alternate Part Functionality for during transactions and MRP Plannning in R12

Hi,
We are on the apps R12.1.3 and there is a desperate requirement of Alternate Part functionality.

We defined some items with their respective Alternate / Substitute Items in Item relationships form.

Requirement was to use these Alternate / Substitute item during the Material transactions and also for Planning the MRP

Could any one had experienced the same scenario or having any information please update me.
