Why we have to close PO ?

Dear all,
   I have questions to ask.
1. Why we have to close PO?
2. Is there any difference btw manually close PO and automatically close po ?
3. I have seen many PO status eg. Close for receiving , Close for invoicing , What is the difference?
4. What about Mass Close PO?
