Do I need a relational database for Essbase 11.1.2.2 and EAS 11.1.2.2 in standalone mode?

Install guide states I'll need to configure Foundation Services, but not deploy for standalone Essbase.  Will I need that relational databse for everyday start/stopping of Essbase?

Will I need the realtional for Administrative Servies as well?  And for patching/upgrades later on?
