What is the logic behind same calendar will allow us to choose multiple period types

 Hi Folks,
While defining Calendar "X" I am able to choose multiple period types i.e Monthly, Quarterly and Daily etc. Please explain what is the logic behind this?

Please explain with suitable business example.
