Retaining old Project Id's and Task Id's

Hello All,
As part of data migration for oracle Projects, there is a request from the customer to retain the old project id's and task id's for the projects that will now be created in the R12 instance, using the API's. We were able to customize the API to retain the ID's, but are not sure about the  adverse affects of it, if any.

If anyone has done this kind of activity earlier could you please share your experiances? Also, please advise if it is safe to do so.
