What is meant by the Price Type ??

We all know that we need to give some Price Type under the Purchasing Options. This is actually the Lookup from where we used to select any Price Type I-e Variable, Cost Plus Percentage, Indexed etc. Now I am not getting what is the purpose of this field ?? How does we could make the Diffrence b/w the various Price Types ? Whatever Prices we enter into the Requisition / PO/ RFQ / Quotation , what Price Type these would be called if nothing is select under the Price Type of Purchasing Options ??
