securefiles slower performance then basicfiles?

We were running some tests to verify the performance of securefiles(lobs) vs. basicfiles and we are seeing basicfiles are faster if the lob size is around 4k to 6k.  Has anyone else experienced anything similar?  I wasn't sure if this was expected behavior or not since the lob size used was rather small.  We are using v 11.2.0.2 of the db on linux.  Any input would be appreciated.
