Personalise Invoice Workbench form

HiWe are personalising the Invoice Workbench form to force a particular field to be mandatory. We've put a trigger (when new record instance)  in and the actual field turns yellow, but it still allows us to save the record and exit the form whilst having null in the field . How can I force this?
