Editing Asset Numbers

Our site uses automatic asset numbering. We also allow asset numbers to be edited. A user has inadvertantly edited the Asset Number thinking it was a Tag Number field and saved the change. Trying to edit the asset number back to the original automated asset number returns an error message "This asset number is reserved for automatic asset numbering"

Is there a process or script available to have the automated asset number reinstated?
