Material Workbench Shows Extra Parantheses on LPN line in qty tree

We are seeing a couple of extra characters in the quantity tree as we expand it. They appear to be paired parentheses and look sort of like a zero.  For example:

B123456  ()

We have problems interacting with these LPN in some transactions.  Does anyone know why the extra characters appear in the workbench?
