Baseline in oracle 11g

Can someone explain to me the baseline in Oracle 11g? I am learning about AWR and I just don't seem to grasp the concept of baseline. i have read a number of documents but still I just don't get it.

"A baseline is a pair of snapshots that represents a specific period of usage. Once baselines are defined they can be used to compare current performance against similar periods in the past"

I get thsi part but what is it useful for? Why are those snapshots taken etc? Why some snapshots are associated with a baseline and some are not?
