GL_BALANCES has grown so big

At customer site, GL_BALANCES has grown so large, with around 6 crores of rows.

Is there a benchmark,

Is this really a lot of data ?

Customer fear about the performance issue being hit anytime ?

when do we think of archiving ?

what are the best practices to control growth of these tables ?

how long we should allow these tables to grow ?

how do we know that we are hitting performance because of the huge volume of data (benchmark) ??
