Using Sub-Variable in SQL Data Sources for Rules file.

Does anyone have a document reference or know about using Substitution variables in the Open SQL Data Sources Dialog box?  What is the value of the variable supposed to look like?  I have one set to the name of the ODBC connection, which when I try to connect I get Error: 1021001 Failed to Establish Connection with SQL Database Server.
