Can anyone explain how the Sell By Date (SBDD) works?

I have had a request to prevent shipping material on an ST/OT that is within a week of the expiration date. We still would like to be able to issue the material to a WO up through the expiration date.  I'm wondering if the Sell By date - SBDD - in F4102 would help with this.  I cannot find any information in the Knowledge Base.
