urgent help

table size is 11gb and we are trying to add the column whose datatype is varchar2.
As per application team adding column usually take 2 hrs but it is taking 24 hours but still running.

Please give me the details tips hints and reasons for this and scripts to monitor and to fix this.Thanks in Advance.

Note:came to know from my collegue that there lock by smon ..but I didnt get it..Please help
