Configurator segment answers

Hi
When the configured item segments are required, Upon using sales order entry all the answers turn red reflecting errors as fields are required. These errors disappear as you start giving the answers.
How can you avoid having errors in the answers field before starting respondng to the required segment (same as if they were optional)
