Redo scan

Hi,
Some sort of redo scan appeared to have been taking place in the trace file and there are ora-3113 occur during this process.
Usually I see redo scans when restarting the database, for example, when transactions have to be applied or rolled back.
Can someone help and clarify when this process work?
Is it work in the regular redo archiving or the log switch?
