Clearing of log files in Dataguard

Hi,
Why is it required to clear the redo log files in a dataguard environment? Why cant those be used just like that? I mean, anyways, nothing is being written to it, so why not just overwrite, even if there was something in it?

Also, what exactly happens when redo log files are cleared?
