No Recovery Catalog?

 Hi,
What are some of the limitations/implications of implementing data guard configuration without the use of a recovery catalog?  I have seen the recommendations (and at times requirements) in the Backup and Recovery User's Guide and Data Guard Concepts/Admin documentation, but no document that clearly documents the specific risks associated with not using one.  I am definitely a proponent of using it, based on the best practices I've read thus far.  But it would be very helpful to know outright why RMAN using a controlfile is not sufficient for this type of environment.
