Average Leadtime ALTD - Supplier/Item Relationships Table

I'm not familiar with the Average Leadtime field (ALTD) on the Supplier/Item Relationship record and how it is recalculated based on subsequent additional receipts for the same item/Branch from the same supplier. Any details are appreciated. If anyone has a white paper on the topic, that would be great too.
