How can I apply discount for 20 % and 30 % at the same time and not one over the other

I have a modifier for customer X 20 % discount

I have a modifier for item A 30 % discount

The sales order contains customer X and item A

I need to control that the discount is 50 % and not the first time 20 % and 30 % on the remaining amount from 20 %

is this done by grouping?
