Datagaurd implementation stretegy?

 Hi
What should be NEW  datagaurd implementation stretegy?

currently we are using two physical server, Primary and physical standby were all HDD in installed in server itself in both server sepretaly. and both server has different IP address. 
when primary failed we are switch manually to standby server and change IP address in JBOSS configuration file and restart our application. 
but i this is old method. what is current and latest method for using oracle dataguard if I have not constraint of hardware and software.
