11gR2 Grid infrastructure ASM requires raw devices to create ASM instance

Hi,

The requirement is we would be creating 11.2.0.3 Grid infrastructure on 3 nodes, OS is RedHat Linux 5.7. I have a doubt on do we really need a Raw Devices to create ASM disk groups? Storage would be used in our requirement is SAN. So pls clarify do we really need Raw devices for ASM?
