backing up physical standby

in addition to a dataguard physical standby, i do an rman backup everynight, and an export of the production db. I also copy the physical standby db to tape but i don't shut it down first. In retrospect i don't thnik the tape copy is any good without first shutting down the physical standby. Does it make any sense to backup the physical standby to tape even if i shut it down first ? I'm trying to visualize under what circumstances. i would restore the pysical standby from tape ?
