Batch Bursting Error

Does any one know what causes this error?  It is happening in only one application and it is random and it is sometimes a different enity that is affected.  The error is "nested exception is: java.lang.NullPointerException".  This happens in the production environment only, but not in QA.  We have not updated and java.  Our version is 11.1.2.1.
