Automatic Opportunity ID / number generation

Hi,
There is a requirement where customer has asked if some unique Opportunity ID / number can be generated in the system. Is there a possibility to generate such ID / number through any mechanism in the CRM system?

Also, I noticed that an Opportunity ID gets generated at the backend however this filed isn't available for front-end layout.
