Confusion in studying ASM

 Hello There!!
I am really confused where to start and proceed further on the topic ASM.
Everywhere I can see the advantages of ASM over filesystem and so on but never below things and they are still mysteries to me.

1) How does ASM works and each and every backup ground process?
2) How does database instance interact with ASM instance (in single instance and RAC)?
3) When and what kind of situation does the backup-ground process of ASM triggered? 
4) at what kind of situation does database instance interact with ASM instance and what exactly happens at these situation?
5) And little more about storage of ASM.
