Mixing Rman and database versions

Have a situation where a project tried to use RMAN 11.2 software to copy and convert 10.2 database files from HPUX 11.23 to AIX 6.1.  The HP file systems were exported and NFS mounted to the AIX system. The intent was to reduce upgrade steps.

The process worked without errors however at 25% throughput compared to previous tests. Original throughput was restored when the project reverted to using the 10.2 RMAN software.

I have been unable to find any warnings or advisories about problems with mixing oracle versions when using RMAN. Thoght if RMAN was a higher version than the database, usingmixed versions would be acceptable/
