Environment Variables - Recommended

Hello, We have been using EBS(Currently in R12) for more than 9 years now and recently an question came up on the environment variable setup for custom applications..
We have an environment variable for each custom applications like 
XXAR_TOP, XXAP_TOP,XXGL_TOP etc.  Instead of one environment variable for all custom application.  Just wanted to ask which is a better and recommended way.
