Recover rman backup using TDPO

Hi,
Our database datafiles bacame inconsistent and now we couldn't bring it online. we need to restore our database to 11-Sep-13 from tape. Based on our logs, backup for that day is 'successful'. The backup is a level 0 incremental backup.

1st :how can we validate that the backup is still available before we do the actual backup?

2nd: if proven to be available, what are the complete steps to restore/recover the database using that tape backup dating 11-Sep-13?
