Default search

My users do not like when they click on the magnifying glass to search for an owner of an account, contact, or opportunity, that the default search is alias.  They would like the default to be last name.  They often start typing in the last name in alias, and then when they switch the dropdown from alias to last name, it delets what they had been typing.

Does anyone know how to switch the default to last name?
