Scrapping unit when Repairing by Direct Exchange terminates Service Contract

When executing a repair by Exchange (not Advanced Exchange) receive the defective device and determine it is not repairable so device is scrapped then a replacement device is sent out.  When the device is scrapped this terminates any Service Contracts and warranty lines for the serial number.  Shipping the replacement does not result in this device inheriting the Entitlement of the now scrapped device.

Is this intended functionality, if so then presumably the scrap step has to be done after the replacement has been shipped?
