setup grades/grade rates

Hi!  We would like to prevent users from entering amounts out of range of a pay scale for particular positions when using the salary form.  We are currently using 11.10.5.2, and will be upgrading to R12 in the next few months.  What would be the correct way to achieve this and is there documentation on how to do it successfully?
