Mandatory Template Application

I have received a request to make application of at least one item template mandatory before a new inventory item is initially saved. The core of the issue is that the current business process is to create an item, set attributes many manually, then apply template, rather than applying template as first step. We therefore find ourselves in a situation where manually set values are sometimes saved prematurely and then not overwritten by the template (as would be expected). Adjusting the existing process use a template THEN modify details of the item has, unfortunately, been labeled as a non-starter.
