Required Primary Owner ID

Our users are trying to convert a lead to a contact (No Account or Opportunity), but are receiving this error: SBL-DAT-00498 stating that the Primary Owner ID is a required field, but I mapped the Lead Owner ID to the Customer Primary Owner ID field.

I also tried defaulting the Customer Primary Owner ID field to a single user using the User's Integration ID value (Post Default not checked).  We're still having no luck and we can't convert our leds to contacts.  HELP!
