Ex-Employee Duplicate Applicant Record

We have an ex-employee who has created an extra person record by registering an an applicant on the External Visitor site via iRecruitment. We have matched the duplicates via - iRecruiter > Candidates > Individual > Find Duplicates and this has added it to the confirmed duplicates table. However they have already applied for a position with the new person record and we don't know how to join these records together so that we are able to hire them using the ex-employee number. Can anyone prvide some insight on this.
