Is it backward compatibility of templates design by BIPub Desktop 10g with report generation by BIPu

I have a rtf template desgined by BIPub Desktop 10.1.3.4 and it can be generated to a report output by BIPub JAVA API of 10.1.3.4;
but when I use it to do output generation by BIPub JAVA API of 11.1.1.6, it met exception.
So I'm wondering if there is any backword compatibility mechanism, saying the old templates can work under the new java apis.
Do I have to redesign my template by BIPub Desktop 11.1.1.6 when I want to upgrade the JAVA API part from 10.1.3.4 to 11.1.1.6
