What is a typical compression ratio for performing a RMAN backup in Oracle 10G?

Client is using Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0 - 64 bit on HPUX.

Am attempting to make an initial backup of a multi terabyte database using RMAN. The client has space restrictions and there is no recent backup.  Also no baseline exists for space consumed by RMAN or execution time for RMAN.

Issues I am trying to factor, but have no baseline:

1)      RMAN cold backup versus Hot backup performance difference?

2)      RMAN asynchronous versus synchronous pros and cons

Am not sure if there is a faster way to clone/backup the database

Howdy, Stranger!
