Unable to "ping" web addresses from terminal

I have been trying to install some packages through yum, but haven't been able to since I keep getting a "host not reachable" error. I tried "ping www.yahoo.com", but got the same error again.

I am using OEL 6, in an Oracle VM (Version 4.2.6-82870), on a Windows 7 System. I am able to access the internet through firefox browser, but can't install any packages from the terminal, as mentioned before. I tried disabling the firewall, but to no avail.

Is there another way to install the packages? Because I have to resolve quite a few dependencies for my Oracle DB installation.
