NLS_LANG implications

Our database characterset for EBS database is UTF8, however the NLS_LANG for application env was showing AL32UTF8. During the R12 upgrade we manuaally changed it to UTF8 in application to match with the database and ran the upgrade. Still some of the application tiers are showing AL32UTF8. Is there any implication to this difference? Is it necessary to update the app tier to match the db tier? Will it cause issues if left without changing?
