converting a report to excel

Hi all

I have created a .xls template using standalone excel analyzer, using the XDO_?? format.
 I have tested the template with sample data from the xml output of a report.  (concurrent program>xyz report > output .xml)

I have requirement to insert this template in xml publisher responsibility and  generate and excel output when the report is run. (similar to .rtf)
I have tried creating a data definition and template but this does not work. Please suggest
