SO Lines remains in in status 'Awaiting Shipping'

Hi
I am trying to release a sales order using the release sales order form. upon execution, the process competes successfully, however the SO lines remain in status 'Awaiting Shipping'. There is no hold on the sales order and inventory period is opened. Same process worked well 2 days ago.
