GI home ownership changed to root

Oracle rdbms SE-One, 11.2

GI 11.2

Oracle Linux 5.6

I have noticed that when installilng/upgrading my GI home (NON-RAC, NO clusters) from 11.2.0.1 to 11.2.0.2 to 11.2.0.3 or applying any PSUs, the ownership of the GI home itself (not the subidirs) is changed to root:oinstall.  I've not found any docs on this behavior and am really curious about the justification, and if owneship should/should not be changed back to oracle:oinstall with a simple non-recursive chown oracle:oinstall.

And as a side question .. while my installation is is NOT clustered and does NOT use RAC, I find myself pulling my hair out trying to wade through the installation/upgrade/psu documentation that seems to assume that all GI installations are for clustered/RAC environments.  Just look at the TOC for the Grid Infrastructure Installation Guide (e22489-03):
