How to update the person name of type contact

Hi,

We have to update the first_name and full_name of the person in per_all_people_f table who is a 'Contact'.

There is a special charecter in the name of the person who is a dependent child for the employee and when the employee is raising the Child fee reimbursement then it is getting in to error.

Is there any API to update the name or can we do the direct update on per_all_people_f table?

Any help is much appreciated.
