Phone Number Display Area Code and 1 for US English

My Locale and Country is set to English / US, when I have a contact or account setup with phone numbers the country is also US

I would like to remove the 1 in front of the area code (###) ### - ####

So for example when I type in a phone number into a contact as (###) ### - #### then save it, the number 1 will automatically appear in from the the phone number

Is there any settings somewhere to remove the number 1 or preventing it from happening?
