XML Bursting Email Validation

Evening, Gurus!

Can anyone advise how the XML Publisher Report Bursting Program decides what email addresses are valid and which are invalid? I am receiving the two errors below in the log when attempting to send messages outside of my company. Internal addresses seem to work just fine. I tried an email for our DBA group who have emails hosted elsewhere, but appear in our Active Directory and received the same error messages. There is one theory down!

Message has not been sent for following invalid addresses: [perfectly good email address]

Message has not been sent for following addresses by some reason: [email address which works just fine unless an address deemed "invalid" is also included]
