Database Backup and Recovery (MOSC)

good day
recently we need to restore a 8i database.
data protector admin put all backup pieces on a disk in the machine the database to be restored.
we are trying to restore the controlfile like this:  restore controlfile from file 'xxxxx' with no luck (sintax errors)

Does any one knows how to do that in 8i
