More than 2 decimal places possible on layout?

We currently have a Currency field in use on a Custom Object.
Our business needs have changed and we need more than 2 decimal places.

We tried to replace that currency field with a Number field.
However even a number field truncates it to 2 decimal places.

A report with the same field shows this with all decimal places correctly.

Is there any way to show more than 2 decimal places on the layout using any type of number/ integer / currency fields? or is using a text field the only option?
