Inquiry, what are the limits to the Oracle sid (instance name) name that can be used,

Hello.  what would be the limits to using/selecting an Oracle Sid/Instance Name?  By limits I mean length/number characters that can be used and if any special characters can't be used  such as "?%&*!@" and such?  Thanks.
